  • Q.2 | I never received my user name and password.
  • A.2 | When this site was launched, all class members for whom Yale had a current email address were sent a message with their personal user name (preferred email address) and password. If you didn't receive the message, it could be because you never furnished an email address to Yale, or because the email address you furnished is now out of date. You can ask for a password by going to the Request Support page, completing the form and selecting "I need a user name and password." Allow time for your request to be verified and answered by a volunteer member of the Class Website Committee.

  •
  • Q.10 | Why is my password for the Class website different from my password for the Online Alumni Directory?
  • A.10 | Your password for the Yale '80 website is different from your password for the Online Alumni Directory because, although the Class received the initial data for this site from Yale's Alumni Records, the databases are separate and, at this time, not integrated (they don't talk to each other).

  • Q.11 | I requested a new password, but when I sign in, my spouse's Profile comes up.
  • A.11 | If your spouse comes up under 'My Profile' when you sign in, then you and your spouse are probably using the same email address as your user name. To function properly, the Members area requires that each Class member have a unique email address. Please select a new preferred email address as your user name. Then go to the Request Support page and select 'I need a user name and password' from 'Area where I need help'. Please include your full first and last name and preferred email address on the form, and enter your residential college into the description. We will send you new sign in information.

  • A.12 | Sorry, but access to the Members' Area of yale80.org is restricted to members of the Class of '80, but you can certainly reach members of this class through Yale's Online Alumni Directory at the AYA online Alumni Directory.

  • Q.14 | How do I display a photograph on the front page in the online Class Book?
  • A.14 | The photograph in the Class Book is taken from your photos in My Profile. If you have not uploaded a photo, the image displayed will only be your image from our 1980 Yale Banner. If you have uploaded one or more photos, the primary photo will be displayed with your name in the Class Book.

  •
  • Q.15 | How do I replace one of my photographs in the online Class Book?
  • A.15 | You can change your photograph as displayed in the Class Book by uploading a different photo and selecting it as your primary photo. You may hide your 1980 Banner photo by checking the "Hide Banner Photo" button on your individual profile page. Hiding your profile will prevent you and your classmates from seeing this particular image in the Class Book. To reveal the 1980 Banner photo, just un-check the hide button.

  • Q.17 | How do I put a video in my Profile?
  • A.17 | After signing in, click on My Profile in the left hand sidebar, then go to Edit Videos. In order to add a video to your profile, your video must be hosted on a video sharing website such as Youtube.com or Vimeo.com (Youtube works best, but most will work). These sites will provide you with an HTML "embed" code for each video you upload. Copy this code and enter it in the appropriate field on the "Edit Videos" page.

  • Q.18 | Why don't I have a Banner Photo in my Profile?
  • A.18 | For the Class of '80 website we used the content from the 1980 Yale Banner and did our best to match that with current information from Yale's Alumni Records. If there is no Banner photo on your Profile page, it may be because you changed your name and we were unable to link a 1980 Banner name with your current name. Or it may be because you didn't graduate with our year, or you didn't submit your photo or information to the Banner when you were a student, and therefore you do not appear in the 1980 Banner. We only digitized the 1980 Banner, so only that specific Banner's photo or text content was available.

  • Q.19 | What's Karl Marx doing next to so many names?
  • A.19 | Karl Marx's image was used in our 1980 Old Campus (Freshman Facebook) when we did not have an individual's photograph. Likewise, for our Class Website, we decided to use Karl Marx's image in the absence of a 1980 Banner photo.

  •
  • Q.20 | Can I make my 1980 Banner image disappear?
  • A.20 | Yes. On your member Profile page, click the "Hide" button beneath your 1980 Banner photo. Your Banner photo will be hidden from other members, and a blurred image marked "Hidden" will appear to others. Your Banner image will be still be visible to yourself on your Profile page. To make this image reappear to others, click the "Show" button beneath the Banner image on your Profile page.

  • Q.24 | Why does this site appear to be mostly in plain text with very little color?
  • A.24 | In order to make the site design more portable and easier to update, we decided to design for 5.0 web browsers and above. This means that on some web browsers made before 2000, the site will not render the same as on newer browsers that uphold current web standards. We used a combined technology approach that still allows users with older browsers to use the site and see the information displayed in the right places, but without all the colors and styles.

As you are probably experiencing this issue on many websites, we suggest upgrading your browser if you have the ability to do so. Upgrading your browser will improve your web experience, allowing you to properly view more websites.

    How to upgrade:
Here are a few suggestions for browsers that support web standards and will help improve your web experience. Choose a link below and follow instructions from the page where you are directed:

    Windows:
    Mozilla Firefox | Netscape 7 | Microsoft IE 6
    Macintosh:
Mozilla Firefox | Apple Safari | Netscape 7

Blog

  • Q.26 | What in the world is a 'blog'?
  • A.26 | A blog (short for web log) is a personal journal that is frequently updated and intended for public consumption. Essential characteristics of the Yale Class of '80 Blog are its journal form, informal style, and content generated by classmates that reflects the personality of the class. 'Posting a blog' initiates a discussion topic. Readers can respond by 'posting a comment'. Please note that, while only Yale '80 members are authorized to post and comment on our class blog, the blog is viewable by the public. See Blogging Best Practices for more info.
