George J. Hitchcock has passed away

By Jane E. Allen

I'm sorry to pass on the news that George J. Hitchcock died suddenly on July 28, 2009, in the emergency room of Trinity Medical Center West in Steubenville, Ohio. George was 53. He was born in Steubenville and grew up in Toronto, Ohio, where he was active in the Boy Scouts. At Yale, he lived in Trumbull College and played football. He spent his summers working at the Rogers Paper Mill. George didn’t start with our class, but graduated in 1980 with a major in business and statistics. After graduation, he returned to his hometown with Marion Rogers, the high school sweetheart he’d married on Dec. 29, 1978. Together, they raised two daughters and George happily served as volunteer coach in various sports and as an athletic director. He was self-employed for many years, serving as president of three corporations, Empire Truck and Trailer, Rogers Trucking Company and Gem City Napa. He is survived by his wife Marion; his daughters, Meredith Lee Hitchcock of Chicago and Kelsey Rebecca Hitchcock, a student at the University of Notre Dame; four brothers, Terry Hitchcock of Channahon, Ohio; Ed Hitchcock of North Carolina; Jim Hitchcock of Morris, Ohio; and Dan Hitchcock of North Carolina; two sisters, Mary Bradley of North Carolina and Cassie Patterson of Villa Park, Ohio, and their families. His mother, Sheila Layman Hitchcock of Kernersvile, N.C., died on Aug. 3, 2009 in North Carolina.
Memorial donations in George’s memory may be made to the St. Francis Central School, 1225 North River Ave., Toronto, OH 43964.
